Director (Germany)
Yannik Wiedwald is a young filmmaker and director from Germany. Since his childhood he has been interested in cinema and film in general. So it wasn't particularly difficult for him to turn to his passion - filmmaking - after he finished school.
During lockdown he made a short animation "My Flatmete Jonas" which our jury could not omit.

— What inspired you to make your short film? How did you come up with that idea?

— I came up with that idea because i struggled with boredom during the Lockdown! I just played video games, watched movies and didn't do anything at all. One day i made the decision to make a film to cope with this situation and to get myself back on track…
I live in a shared appartment and so i just watched one of my flatmates and observed his behavior to see how he deals with that whole situation.

— Tell us how it was to produce your film? What was the starting point, funding, script, shooting, casting, edit etc.
— I didn't really have any kind of budget and we weren't allowed to go outside, so it was basically a one man army-project. I just observed Jonas and drew everything he did in photoshop using a graphic tablet. Then i put all these drawn images into After Effects and aligned them, did some little editing magic and the visual part was done! After that i got in touch with Sven, a friend of mine who did the sound design and looked for a voice actor who recorded my text.
— Do you have a dream?

My dream is probably every filmmakers dream… Being able to do what i love and to earn a living by that. So i just want to share my stories with the world for as long as i'm able to!
— What is your favorite film cite?
— "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us" (Gandalf)
— Give advice for those who want to make a film, but don't know from where to start?
Don't care about rules, "cinematic looks", story structures… you name it. Just do what feels right. Watch a lot of short films. Gear doesn't matter! Just shoot with your phone or your grandma's video recorder.. it really doesn't matter as long as you like it! And once you finished your first one, you start writing your second one. Just never stop!
